Meta, Apple and Alphabet (owner of Google) are being investigated for possible violations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). If they are found to have violated the law, they could face fines in the millions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Potential Millions in Fines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the DMA, companies can be fined up to 10% of their annual turnover if they are found to be in breach of the law. This regulation aims to prevent large technology companies from using their power to control the market. This ensures fair and open competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigations were announced by Margrethe Vestager, EU antitrust chief, and Thierry Breton, head of industry, last Monday. These inquiries affect the six largest companies in the technology sector: Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and ByteDance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foreign Companies Under Scrutiny<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these companies is based in Europe. Five of them are in the United States, while ByteDance, owner of TikTok, is based in Beijing. Despite not being in Europe, these companies must comply with EU regulations due to their impact on the European market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compliance Reports and New Investigations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies recently submitted their compliance reports, which were prepared in detail. However, three of these companies are now facing new questions, only two weeks after submitting those reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fines and Claims in Other Markets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This announcement comes three weeks after the EU fined Apple \u20ac1.8 billion for violating competition laws in music streaming. In addition, the U.S. also accused Apple of monopolizing the smartphone market. This accusation was made in a landmark lawsuit last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Company Responses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Apple spokesperson stated that the company will fully cooperate with the investigation. In addition, he assured that its plan complies with the DMA. Apple also mentioned that it has established mechanisms to comply with the law and protect users' privacy in the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For its part, Meta defended its ad-free subscription model. According to Meta, this model is designed to comply with various regulations, including the DMA. Meta also said it will continue to collaborate with the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigations into Meta, Apple and Alphabet show the growing regulatory pressure on big tech companies. The EU is taking steps to ensure a fairer market. In the meantime, these companies must adapt to new laws and could face sanctions for uncompetitive practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
